21CLCC/Woodburn After School Club Director

The Woodburn After School Club is one of the state's largest 21st Century Community Learning Center programs.  With an average daily attendance of over 500 students across 4 elementary schools, 3 middle schools, the high school and a migrant housing complex, the After School Club strives to provide outstanding academic and enrichment opportunities for students PreK-12.  In addition, the After School Club also supports endeavors such as the following:
  • Summer Camp/Summer School
  • Family University/FamU
  • Dia del Niño

Assistant Principal

In October 2007 I was asked to step in for one year to cover a sudden vacancy in the Assistant Principal’s office.  I did so knowing the position was due to be cut at the end of the year, but realized it would serve a vital role within the school since the principal was only working half-time at the school (she was assigned half-time at the district office, as well).  As AP, I provided leadership and supervision for all licensed and classified staff in all areas of instruction, behavior, curriculum, assessment, scheduling, and evaluation.  Duties included: communicate with students, staff, parents, and others regarding issues of discipline, attendance, academic performance, etc.; Assist with recruitment and hiring of new staff members; Provide administrative leadership for meetings and activities; Investigate infractions and impose discipline;  Host assemblies and events; Coordinate multiple committees.  I actively promoted a positive, caring learning environment, lead school improvement initiatives, interviewed new staff, and supervised all areas of school operation.

Bi-lingual Third Grade Classroom Teacher

In 2011 I was transfered to Washington Elementary School to facilitate the 1:1 implementation of iPads in the third grade.  During this time, I taught primarily in Spanish as part of the 50/50 dual-language program.  I also provided instruction to staff on iPad use as a teaching tool. Additionally, I coordinated the Portland TrailBlazer Reading Challenge program school-wide and took 350 participants to a Trailblazer game at the Portland Rose Garden Arena.  I also supported technology-based parent literacy classes.

I taught computer classes and coordinated the TAG Program at Nellie Muir.  As technology teacher, I taught computer literacy classes to grades K-5.
My efforts as TAG Coordinator lead to an enthusiasm for achievement and learning at Nellie Muir.  Our TAG lego robotics team won our local competition and continued to the state division.  We piloted a first-in-the-nation student-run Savings Bank, sponsored Washington Mutual.  TAG Students were responsible for the success of student-run Yearbooks, School Newspaper, Student Store, Food Drive, etc.

Summer School Principal

2008, Woodburn School District, Woodburn, Oregon
The Woodburn Summer School serves PreK-12 students who have been classified as migrant students and who are also considered to need additional support during the summer months.  As such, I planned  and implemented a summer school to serve Woodburn’s migrant population in accordance  with federal Migrant Program guidelines.  I selected and trained staff to carry out program’s missions and objectives.  I also organized efforts between the two campuses to optimize student success, including, (but not limited to) class/recess/lunch/staff scheduling, bussing, addressing special education needs, supply and textbook needs, staff development, etc.  In addition, I facilitated transportation, housing, recreation, and other needs for the five bi-national teachers from México who assisted the summer school program.  This was a part-time/temporary position concurrent with Assistant Principal.
